The Off-White x Air Jordan 4 Retro "Bred" is an unreleased sample (Friends & Family / prototype) created as part of the collaboration between Jordan Brand and the late Virgil Abloh's Off-White. Although it never received an official retail launch, the sneaker has become one of the most legendary Air Jordan samples ever produced, offering a rare glimpse into Virgil Abloh's creative process and his vision for reimagining the iconic "Bred" colorway.
The design is inspired by Virgil Abloh's deconstructed design philosophy, where classic silhouettes are rebuilt by exposing their construction and highlighting normally hidden details. Borrowing the timeless "Bred" (Black/Red) color scheme made famous by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, the shoe features a premium Black nubuck upper, translucent TPU support wings, exposed foam around the collar and tongue, semi-transparent mesh panels, signature Helvetica text on the medial side, industrial-style stitching, and Off-White's iconic zip tie. The combination of the beloved "Bred" palette with Virgil's deconstructed aesthetic creates a bold fusion of basketball heritage, luxury fashion, and contemporary streetwear design while preserving the unmistakable DNA of the original Air Jordan 4.
The original Air Jordan 4 debuted in 1989, designed by legendary footwear designer Tinker Hatfield, introducing groundbreaking innovations such as visible Air cushioning, breathable mesh construction, and the signature wing support system. The Off-White x Air Jordan 4 Retro "Bred" is believed to have been created around 2019–2020 during the development period of the retail Off-White x Air Jordan 4 "Sail". Unlike the "Sail" colorway, however, the "Bred" version was never officially released to the public, existing only as an extremely limited sample and Friends & Family piece. Its rarity, connection to Virgil Abloh, and unreleased status have made it one of the most desirable Air Jordan 4 prototypes in sneaker history.
